1. Who we are
AreaScore.ca ("AreaScore", "we") is operated by AreaScore Inc., 157 Adelaide Street West, Suite 609, Toronto, Ontario M5H 4E7, Canada. We help people learn about and compare Canadian cities, towns, and neighbourhoods using public data.
Privacy officer: Privacy Officer, AreaScore Inc., privacy@areascore.ca. This person is responsible for the protection of personal information.
2. What we collect
| What | When | Why | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name, email address, and a password hash (or the sign-in method you choose) | When you create an account | To run your account and sign you in | Life of the account. Deleted within 30 days of a deletion request, except a record we must keep by law |
| IP address and browser on a sign-in session | While you are signed in | Security and abuse prevention | The session, then 30 days |
| IP address in server security logs | A visit | Security and troubleshooting | 30 days |
| Places you save, and priority weights you save | When you use those features | To show them to you on your account | Life of the account |
| Technical details of an error (browser, page address, error message), without your IP address or account | When a page or the server fails | To find and fix the problem | 90 days at most |
| Name and email, if you write to us | When you contact us | To reply | 24 months, or sooner if you ask us to delete the message and we have no duty to keep it |
We do not sell personal information. We do not use personal information to calculate scores. Scores are built from published statistics.
We do not store the text of your searches. We do not collect messages for real estate agents. We do not show advertising cookies. If that changes, we will update this policy first and, where the law requires a choice, we will ask before the new tool runs.
Account email (for example, to confirm an address or reset a password) is sent because you asked for the account. We do not send marketing email.
3. Cookies and analytics
We use cookies and similar storage that the site needs in order to work: to keep you signed in, to remember your language, and to protect the service. These do not track you across other websites.
We use Vercel Web Analytics to count visits. It does not use cookies and it does not build a profile of you. We do not use it to identify your account.
We do not use technology that identifies, locates, or profiles you for advertising. If we add that kind of technology later, it will be off until you turn it on.
4. Who we share information with
We share personal information with service providers who host the site, store the database, deliver account email, or report errors, and only so they can do that work:
- Hosting and visit counts: Vercel Inc., United States
- Database: Neon, on Amazon Web Services, United States
- Account email: Resend, United States
- Error reports: Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.), United States. We configure it not to receive your IP address, cookies, or account details.
Map tiles are loaded from OpenFreeMap. That service receives your IP address and the map request. It does not receive your account.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
5. Storage outside Canada
These providers store or process information in the United States. Information stored there may be accessible to authorities in the United States under their laws. We assessed this transfer for the information described above before relying on it. We do not authorize these providers to use the information for their own marketing.
6. How we protect information
We use encryption in transit (HTTPS), limit access to people who need it, store passwords only as hashes, and delete information on the schedule above.
7. Your rights
You can ask us to give you access to the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, and you can withdraw consent to a use that is not required to provide the service you asked for. Email privacy@areascore.ca. We will respond within 30 days.
You may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or to the privacy commissioner of your province. In Quebec, that is the Commission d'accès à l'information.
8. Children
AreaScore is not directed at children under 14. We do not knowingly collect their information. If we learn that we have, we will delete the account.
9. Privacy incidents
If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify the people affected and the relevant privacy commissioner, as the law requires. If a breach creates a risk of serious injury, we will also notify Quebec's Commission d'accès à l'information when the law requires it. We keep a record of incidents.
10. Changes
We will post updates on this page and change the date above. If a change is significant, we will say so on the site.
